An absolute must!

After reading the positive reviews, we decided to try Tex last night. We could fault nothing about it. The food was superb, the service from both Tex and his charming wife was friendly without being in your face and, although I've marked down slightly for the atmosphere, this is only because there were just a few other people in there. It would certainly be a 10 star with more people creating a bit of a buzz.

Tex is doing absolutely the right thing by offering discounts on his prices at this time, and as you leave, he gives you a voucher for 30% off your next visit which is valid for a month.

For the smokers, there is a delightful semi-covered outside area (although I believe this will change after January) which makes the actual restaurant more comfortable for the non-smokers of course.

I think this restaurant is going to become one of our regulars. I would say to anybody, go there, you will not be disappointed.

Be warned!

Thought we'd try the Prema as a friend had recommended their buffet. We were the only ones there, the host was friendly but the atmosphere was zero. The host sat with us the whole meal, giving us his opinions on Margaret Thatcher, religion, the state of the world today, etc. etc. Very, very basic in the restaurant, with only one table to available to sit at as all the rest were piled with boxes, paper and allsorts. We wouldn't normally mind this as it could reflect value for money in the food. We were wrong!

The food was ok and freshly cooked (not the buffet by the way), but very expensive. Portions were small. We had poppadums and pickle to start, 1 bottle of wine, a main course each and one portion of rice and a portion of vegetables between 2 of us and the bill was 58 euros. Felt quite ripped off, especially as the owner told us we should have gone before 7.30 as all meals are half price then. Perhaps he could have made an exception for us on this as we were the only ones there, and likely to be there that night. We won't be going back.

Lovely and well recommended

Everything about this gem of a place is as described by the previous writer.

We just came upon Kiniras as we were walking round the old town and decided to call in for lunch, attracted by the view of the lovely garden through the pretty reception hall.

We asked for 2 coffees, I had a halloumi and bacon pitta and my wife had a seafood sandwich. Both came beautifully presented with lovely proper chips and a very nice salad, which had been dressed with oil and herbs. We had limitless refills of our coffee cups and the total bill came to 15.35 euros, a really pleasant surprise.

The service was polite, prompt and friendly. Although I cannot comment on the evening meals, I am sure that if they are as good as the lunch time ones, then we would not be disappointed.

I would be very happy to go back there again.

Downhill all the way!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Having last been to this restaurant about a year ago, and writing the review as one of the best fish restaurants we have been to, I am compelled to add these later comments as we came away this time very disappointed.

The service, which I last described as a bit humourless, was bordering on rude. Meals were plonked down in front of us, nobody asked us if we wanted anything else and nobody asked us if everything was alright. We were brought a bottle of water which we hadn't asked for and charged for it. The garlic sauce is definitely NOT the same and I am convinced that my fish (cod with Mama's garlic sauce) was not fresh as I assumed it would be. The one good point about the meal was the vegetables, they were very nice and perfectly cooked. Again, frozen chips were served but we had expected this.

We had the same drinks as before, a carafe of wine and a beer, and the bill total came to 51 euros, way up on last year's total for roughly the same meals, made more painful by the terrible exchange rate from sterling (not the restaurant's fault of course).

I honestly don't think we'll be going again as there are many more fish restaurants to choose from that will hopefully give us better service and better value for money.

Not impressed.

Savvas is an attentive host but he overrates his claims about his food. This place is just ok, nothing special, nothing awful. The food is nothing special either, again not awful, except for his steak with pepper sauce. Oh goodness, it is so hot, it makes the meat virtually inedible (unless you like your mouth on fire!). I could only manage a mouthful and wasn't offered an alternative even though my plate was still full when he came over. Maybe he should put a heat rating next to that dish on the menu to warn people.

It's not bad value for money, but not as good as some. We were charged about 45 euros, for 2 meals which was with starters and a carafe of wine.

I don't think we'd go back again quickly. If we read some more favourable comments in the future we might change our minds.

Better before

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful
We have eaten at Niki's a few times before it came under new management. Our most recent experience didn't compare with how it used to be unfortunately. The service was fine, no problems there, but the food was a big disappointment with the veggies overcooked to the point of being soggy and the lamb chops were so well done they could only be described as being cremated. The starters were mediocre, nothing special. The price was reasonable, about 55 euros for 2 people, with a beer and a carafe of wine but, using our experience, they need to step up their act a bit to match the previous owners' cooking. Sorry, maybe we just picked the wrong dishes or the wrong night for them, but it just seems such a pity and a let down when they have such a nice little oasis off the busy Tombs of the Kings road.

Absolutely scrummy!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
We visited Nicos Tyrimos on the recommendation of our neighbour. Like the previous writer, the place was full of Cypriots, no tourists and the decor is basic, gingham tablecloths and those vaguely uncomfortable chairs that the Cypriots seem so fond of. We couldn't quite manage the meze which I'm sure is as fab as mentioned before, but settled for king prawns in Mama's garlic sauce. It is just wonderful and I cannot bear to think of the calorie content in it. Although I've given a 10 for the food, we were a bit surprised to get frozen chips with the meal (a particular gripe of mine) although the vegetables were, as promised, fresh and very tasty so I've overlooked the chips in the rating as the meal as a whole was superb. We had a carafe of wine and a large beer and with the complimentary bits to start with, our total bill came to 38 euros which we thought was excellent value. As the previous writer mentioned the service is a bit humourless, but not unpleasant so we would recommend this place as probably the best fish tavern we've visited so far and would return.

Good place to go

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Yes, agree with previous writer. Phidias is a bit of a ladies man but guaranteed to make you smile. On the food side, his steaks are perfectly done. We've eaten there a few times and my husband can't fault the way they're cooked. I had sea bass and couldn't fault it, it was lovely. Just the place for a bit of entertainment from the man himself (if you can take the attention ladies!) and reasonably priced, well cooked food. The house wine is nice as well. Worth a visit if you're not looking for anything too posh.

Could do better

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Ummm, well, on first appearances it looks quite enticing. The menu is fairly basic but ok. Unfortunatley, we had one not very good experience there a couple of months ago. We'd ordered chicken in the clay pot cooked in the oven and recommended as a special of the day. When the meals came, the pots were piping hot on the outside but cold on the inside which isn't the healthiest way to serve pre-cooked chicken. My husband took them back to the service area, not wanting to make a fuss in front of the other diners. The lady (manager, owner, not sure but she seems to be in charge) then came out to our table and very loudly disputed that the meal was cold, it couldn't be as she had probed it. We then said we'd order something different, and she told us that other diners now took precedent and we would have to wait in the queue! As you can imagine, this has put us off going again. An apology for our inconvenience would have been enough as we accept that things don't always go to plan. Would be interested in others' experiences as we had heard quite good reports prior to our visit.

Really good value

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful
We have visited this restaurant on lots of occasions and always want to go back. The views from the balcony overlooking the sea are lovely and there is a new children's play area in the garden. The menu offers basic cuisine but excellent value for money and wonderful home cooked chips! We took some Cypriot friends there and they thought it was good. Praise indeed! It is just simply cooked Cypriot food, served by the family and very relaxing as well as being very clean and not at all expensive. Well recommended.
