Good Indian food but something missing

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
We have eaten at Raj II before but never at this one in the middle of Kato Paphos.

The food was quite good but it didn’t have the wow factor that we experienced at Raj II. Whilst the poppadums and Peshwary Naan were excellent we found both the vegetable and meat samosas’ rather bland.
The Chicken Dansak and Prawn Tikka Massalla sauces were good.

Good place to people watch but the cars going past can be a bit of a nuisance if you’re sitting outside.

Good, friendly service.

All in all a perfectly good Indian meal but somehow ‘something was missing’

A great meal and good conversation.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Spent 2 weeks in August at a hotel on the Tomb of the Kings Road and on our second week we found this hidden gem. It is off the main road and not prominently located but we found it to be a wonderful place to eat. We visited twice on our second week and tried a range of dishes and we loved the food. We visited early evening and we were waited on by the owner who was very friendly and occasionally sat down for a chat during the evening.
I highly recommend this restaurant as we had 2 fantastic meals and would certainly go back if i visit Paphos again.

Visited here a few weeks ago and had as good a Jalfrazi as ive had anywhere.Service was excellent as well. Lacked atmosphere as there was only a few people in it,but dont let that put you off as having tried most of the Indians in Paphos at one time or another , i think this is the best.
Best Point ? Excellent food

Excellent Indian Restaurant

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful
I am amazed to see this restaurant receiving mixed reviews. I have eaten at The Raj, both at its present and previous location every year for the last five years or so and it is one of my favourite Paphos restaurants. Without doubt it is the best Indian I've ever found in the resort with superb food and a friendly, efficient service. I would not hesitate to recommend The Raj to anyone visiting Paphos. The one, slight downside is the fact it's next to a road, although it's not a particularly busy thoroughfare and soon forgotten once you've ordered a chilled Kingfisher and some poppadoms!

Best Indian in Paphos

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful
One of the best indian meals we have had in Paphos, the service was good, nothing too much trouble the meal was served quickly and was of good quality. We have eaten indian food wherever we have been on holiday and tried many resturants in GB and feel that this was as good as we have had anywhere. The friendliness of the staff made us feel very relaxed and we were never hurried even when the resurant was obviously busy. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Raj

Absolutely the worst meal I've had in Paphos. 3 waiters for a full restaurant. Terrible service, cold food and the 2 meat dishes chicken and lamb had the same sauce on for 2 completely different meals. Went on the ratings for this site.

The Best Curry House in Paphos

3 of 5 people found the following review helpful
Coming from the North of England I am a real curry buff. I make my own along with bahjis.I have been here for nearly five years and up until October 2007 I went to one curry house & it was disgusting.Thank god I have found the Raj. The best Madras I have eaten. I have now been about 6 times and taken different friends with me who all agree it is the best. Shamim is a fabulous host and most attentive. He lets us play around with his menu, making up our own starter selection, this man has patience with us. When we first started going it was mid week in winter so sometimes the place was a little quiet and lacked atmosphere so we could.nt wait until we went at a weekend. Even when it was packed, the service is still excellent. Don't fill up on the dips & popadoms, we always clean the dishes of these are are given more, we could refuse but we are out having a curry, nothing matters.I love the place and are due another visit soon, we have recommended it to many of our friends and some are still waiting to o with us. Don't worry if you don't have an asbestos mouth like me, they do many milder curries for the wimps. Try a mixture of starters as a taster, (Shamim will kill me)you tend to get a good overall taste. We drink local wine there and the guys of course have beer. We are always offered a complimentary drink, and even if Bailey's doesn't go with curry, Shamim is professional enough not to comment and indulges us. Cant say enough,THIS IS THE BEST CURRY HOUSE IN PAPHOS.

Highly recommended

4 of 7 people found the following review helpful
We were very impressed with the quality of the food. The chicken Madras which unusually included coconut in its ingredients was the finest we have ever eaten. The waiting staff were attentive but not intrusive. We enjoyed the meals so much we dined there three times in a week. On the third visit they gave us a comlimentary bottle of wine. We will definitely return next time we visit Cyprus.

VERY GOOD

5 of 9 people found the following review helpful
We have tried Indian cuisine in many different many parts of the world, and often been disappointed, because flavour is always adjusted to suit the tastes, of a particular country.

That is why, our meal at "The Raj" restaurant, was such a delightful surprise. It was truly authentic, with all the subtle, aromatic flavours,of the East. Every mouthful, was delicious.

The rice, was the best I have ever eaten in Cyprus. Truly white, and fluffy. Enjoyable! Not like the usual fare, that accompanies a meal here.

The service was excellent, and the atmosphere relaxing. The people working there were obviously happy in their job,and this added to the

pleasure of eating in the restaurant. This was our first visit, and we will definately be going again.

Just as I have never forgotten a certain dish, of chicken and coconut, cooked inside a palm leaf, experienced in Singapore, and the true Nasi Goreng, tasted in Indonesia, I will remember the meal eaten at The "Raj" last Wednesday, with appreciation.

Wendy and Trevor.

Not a good experience!

10 of 16 people found the following review helpful
On holiday in Cyprus, I visited this website before we went, printed the discount voucher and went to the Raj. On presenting the voucher a member of staff came and inquired if we lived in Cyprus and then as to how we had heard of this website (It’s a google thing) Anyway now that he is aware that I am likely to do a review I thought that would guarantee us a good meal.

The poppadums were nice and some of the dips were better that the lime chutney that is always dished up in England, Onion bhaji very nice.

Then the problems started. Should have known it was not going well when the waiter tried to bring us someone else’s meal. When ours arrived he got the meals mixed up and I was given my wife’s chicken passanda and she was given my chefs special chicken marghini (She doesn’t do hot and spicy) While I was thinking how bland my meal was her taste buds were being fired. We obviously realised the mistake and swapped dishes, it was only then that we realised how similar they looked, the waiter must speak a different dialect to the chef! Anyway my marghini was advertised as being cooked with onions, peppers, tomato and red chilli. Any evidence of those ingredients were removed before it left the kitchen. I had about 8 pieces of chicken in a sauce that probably came from a jar with Uncle Bens written on it that had those ingredients listed on the label. That was it chicken and a sauce, nothing else!! Our rice had obviously been cooked earlier and reheated but no extra water was added when it went in the microwave (It’s not rocket science) the result was hard and lumpy rice.

As for the wife’s passanda, she was unable to taste a thing for the rest of the night having had a mouthful of my meal earlier!

I can honestly say that it was our worst meal out in Paphos. The problem with the town is that there are so many places to choose from, when you are only there for 2 weeks you want to go somewhere nice and I got suckered in by some glowing reviews. As I left the restaurant another plane load of tomorrow nights unsuspecting punters was arriving. This restaurant would not survive in a small town in England where it would need to rely on repeat trade, in Paphos they don’t need to rely on repeat trade.

superb once again

6 of 14 people found the following review helpful
We have just had our 6th visit to this restaurant and on each visit the food, service and atmosphere has been superb.

We have lived in Cyprus for over four years and tried many India restaurants and this one certainly tops anything else we have tried.

The varied menu caters for almost every taste, The service is second to none and price wise it is excellent value for money.

The staff are friendly, courtious and professional at all times and nothing is too much trouble.

If you want something that is not on the menu they are only too happy to

try to accomodate.

Definately one to try
