Porto Bello - Somewhere to go back to

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Stayed in The Alexander The Great and wanted to eat somewhere else. Hesitated when we passed the first time; but having quickly checked the menu decided to venture in. Glad we did, although we have a rule; only go once we broke it in a big way and ate there on 4 occasion in the two weeks we were in Pafos. Very good for vegeterians - a very wide choice

Polo Sopresso was to die for - the blue cheese did not overpower the chicken and the saffron sauce was to die for. Pasta was excellent (went for Carbonara). Had several pizzas when we wanted something a little lighter all were cooked to perfection. Could go on like this but Iyou guess you see the point I'm making.

Staff were always helpful and good at suggesting different wines for different main courses.

Occasionally service was a little slow when there were several groups in at the same time but that was a feature of most restaurants we were in
Best Point ? Food Quality

porto bello

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Went to Porto Bello in June 2009. We ordered 2 starters, 2 mains, 1 dessert and some drinks. All food was very good, the mains were pastas, so i can't judge the other dishes, but the pasta was the best I have had in Paphos, so I would definitely recommend it. The bill came to 58 EUR which I think is reasonable. The only problem was waiting for the food for 40 mins, which I think was too long.
Best Point ? delicious pasta
Worst Point ? had to wait a long time for the food

going downhill

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
I reviewed this restaurant over a year ago and it was fantastic but has since changed hands and is not the same. We went in a party of 4 in September 07 and it wasn't as good even then. The pizza was greasy and the pasta dishes not as tasty. My partner tried it again last month and wished he hadn't bothered. He and 4 friends said it was bland and over priced. Please ignore my previous review.

Worst Meal on Holiday

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful
We tried this restuarant as one of our pary of 6 wanted to have a nice Italian Meal.

Porto Bello does not do NICE Italian Food.

Once the staff had arranged themselves enough to find a table we were sat at the side of the restuarant outside where it was very dark. This was probably so that you could not see what you were eating. Once we were sat down a waiter took a drinks order from us and then dissapeared for around 30 minutes.

He then returned and we all ordered starters and main courses, the waiter then did his dissapearing trick again and was gone for at least another 30 minutes before returning to clear the table next to us. We called him over, but he didn't seem to understand our question of why the food was taking so long - seemingly suddenly not able to understand english! This was until my wife banged her knife and fork on the table to make the point clear!! (she's usually quite patient!)

After about a further 10 minutes someone appeared with our starters. These weren't too bad - but not great either considering the wait!

Having finished the starters our main courses started to arrive - in dribs and drabs. One of the meals arrived about 5-10 minutes after everyone elses - still as the rest of us had felt we should start as we were by now starving we quickly realised that he wasn't really missing very much as the food was pretty awful!

I had ordered a seafood pasta on penne pasta instead of the spaghetti on the menu. It was a case of spot the seafood of which it was only squid and a couple of prawns......on a pile of very sticky spaghetti - not penne and there was absolutely no sauce! It was disgusting! The worst dish I have ever had in a restaurant ever!

2 of our party had beef strogonoff with rice. The strogonoff was passable, however the rice looked and tasted like the ambrosia rice pudding that comes from the tin!!

Once we had eaten enough we sat with our plates in front of us, in the meantime several members of staff appeared and began to point up at the side of the building - there were approximately 5 of them We couldnt understand what they were saying, however one of them looked like he was going to try and sit at our table with us - he seemed oblivious to the fact that we were paying customers eating a meal in their restaurant! Finally they all sat down at the table next to us - it all became clear - we must have been sat in the staff area!!!!

Eventually we grabbed someone's attention to ask for the bill - they asked if we wanted pudding - no chance the food was awful and we wanted to be out of there before day break. The waiter went to get the bill - time for another 10 minute wait - before he reappeared with someone else's bill at another table! We asked for the bill again, which finally arrived.

The cost was phenomenal!! For 2 courses and 1 drink for 6 people the cost was around 200 euros!

DONT EAT HERE!!!!!

Bit special

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
Lovely food but a bit pricey. Think the tourists will enjoy it but there are other Italian restaurants as good but not as expensive. Staff very nice although we had to wait a while before we got our 1st drink. Don't mind the food coming slowly as it is freshly cooked. Would return as the surroundings are ok and the food was good. Will need to save up a little bit before.

Fantastico

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful
I have visited this restaurant 3 times over a period of a year and it just gets better. It recently changed hands but the new owner has kept up the standards. the food is plentiful and freshly cooked from the finest ingredients. It may not be fast food but at least you know it is freshly cooked rather than pre heated.

The new owner was very friendly. My partner and I took my parents there the last time we were in Cyprus and they were very impressed. My father usually has to be dragged to an Italian but even he said he would be back. It is a little more expensive than some other bog standard Italians but I would willingly pay the prices for such wonderful food. The atmosphere is good and it actually feels like a proper Italian resaurant.
